Carla May

Principal
Hallyburton Academy

It is my honor to serve as the Principal of Hallyburton Academy. I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to lead positive change to our school and with its student population. Through strong teacher/student relationships, as well as strong community support and partnerships, I know we can help students find success and purpose through graduation and beyond.

This begins my 31st year in education. I attended North Carolina State University and completed licensure requirements through UNC-Charlotte finishing in 1994. I also completed a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education from Appalachian State University in 1998. After spending many years in the classroom as a Math and Science teacher, at all levels including local community colleges and UNC-Charlotte, I moved into an Instructional Facilitator role. Continuing my work with Title 1/At- Risk Schools, I led Low-Performing Middle Schools through necessary and impactful change to meet educational growth. From there I completed my School Administration licensure from Gardner-Webb University and moved into an Assistant Principal role at Asbury Academy Alternative School in Lincoln County Schools for two years. In 2020, I was recruited to Newton-Conover High School where I served as the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction as well as serving as the Secondary Curriculum Liaison. I was presented the opportunity to move to Burke County Public Schools to lead change at Hallyburton Academy this school year utilizing my background experience in Alternative Education and At-Risk Schools. I was recently nominated and voted in as the Vice President of the NCAAE - North Carolina Alternative Associations of Educators.

Personally, I have been married to my High School sweetheart for over 30 years. My husband is an Elementary Assistant Principal in a local district. We have four amazing adult children and one daughter-in-law. Two of our children were college athletes and are now graduated and successfully adulting. Our youngest two children are both in college where one is also a college athlete. We have two Labrador Retrievers who believe they are human. I enjoy the beach, travel, all sports, hiking to waterfalls, and reading.

I am blessed with this opportunity to serve the students, parents, and community in the role as Principal.  I believe in these students and their ability to persevere, as well as learn the art of service to their community. If you have any questions or concerns, or want to volunteer with our students, please call or email!
